“Serving with AmeriCorps taught me that anyone, no matter who you are, can make a difference in their communities and that empathy and support goes a long way and can mean the world to someone else. It taught me that service is incredibly important and because of AmeriCorps, I will continue to volunteer.”

Bianca is a a graduate of Texas A&M University – College Station where she received her B.A. in Communication, and she is currently pursuing a Masters of Public Affairs at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. Bianca joined AmeriCorps to serve her local community and is a proud advocate of the importance of literacy and the power of reading.

As our VISTA Program Leader, Bianca’s main job responsibilities focused on providing member support in the form of professional development trainings and 1×1 meetings, assisting in recruitment, and developing partnerships and connecting with fellow sites and VISTA Leaders to enhance collaboration amongst programs and sites.

Prior to serving as the VISTA Leader, Bianca was our Program Support & Development VISTA placed with partner South Texas Literacy Coalition, where she focused on improving its literacy services and providing fundraising support.

Bianca’s favorite part of her AmeriCorps service was the professional development resources and opportunities that she was provided during and after her service. “From the monthly webinars, VISTACampus modules, and trainings I got to participate in, I truly believed AmeriCorps and the Literacy Coalition wanted me to grow and have the skills I need to flourish in any profession I choose to pursue.” She shared that not only did AmeriCorps allow her to help organizations increase capacity and build sustainability so that they can better support and provide services to their communities, but was also fortunate to gain and strengthen her own hard and soft skills.

In line with her cheerful personality and attitude, a fun fact about Bianca is that she had a bead stuck up her nose for 16 years- and just had it removed last year! “I remember putting it in, but don’t remember it coming out!” Bianca shared.

After 2 years of service, The Literacy Coalition is wishing a heartfelt farewell to our AmeriCorps Vista Program Leader, Bianca Garcia. We have loved getting to know you and are wishing her the best of luck on your journey forward! Thank you for all you’ve done, Bianca!
