The Literacy Coalition is wishing a heartfelt farewell and best wishes to The Learning Center Lead Instructor Donald Yurmanovich! Don started out as an instructor at The Learning Center 4 years ago. Don has enjoyed teaching at The Learning Center because of the unique learning environment, “There’s a lot of one-on-one time with the students. I’ve always liked teaching, but not the one-size fits all education model.” Additionally, Don loves the range of services provided to students, “between social services and all the literacy programs.”

Don has seen that many students initially come to class feeling nervous to attempt school again, but gain confidence when they see The Learning Center offers different learning styles and speeds, letting students pick what’s best for them. Unlike the traditional education system, students can take responsibility over their own learning goals at The Learning Center, which is especially important when they’re balancing full-time jobs and families. As an instructor, Don has loved to see his students grow their skills and realize their full capabilities and intelligence as they spend more time in the classroom. Even after the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the classrooms, it was amazing to see his students continue to work hard and graduate amidst the chaos.

Don will always remember his first student finishing her High School Equivalency preparation classes at The Learning Center and returning to share the news of passing her GED test. He’s always enjoyed catching up with former students and hearing about their successes, especially at the graduation ceremonies. We’ll be missing you at our next ceremony, Don! Your contributions to The Literacy Coalition have been unforgettable. All the best in your future endeavors and thank you for all you’ve done!
