“Hispanic Heritage Month highlights the tapestry of individuals who have enriched the United States with their language, achievements, history, culture, music and food.”

The Literacy Coalition is celebrating our first Latina CEO, Janet Torres, this Hispanic Heritage Month!

Janet is a proud Boricuan and “Nuyorican,” a New York City born and raised Puerto Rican. Known as La Isla del Encanto, or the Island of Enchantment, she loves the history of of Puerto Rico with its Spanish, African, and indigenous Taino and Carib Indian races.

Janet also loves to share her deep love of salsa and traditional music, specifically bomba which has evolved into a community expression of Puerto Rican culture. She also enjoys sharing the typical Puerto Rican foods and drink of the Christmas season with her Texas friends like pernil, pasteles, arroz con gandules, mofongo, tostones, and coquito!

At The Literacy Coalition, we are excited to continue celebrating and honoring Hispanic Heritage Month by recognizing our community members and how Hispanic heritage and culture has strengthened our nation.

Through our work, the Hispanic and Latinx community is celebrated everyday. As more than a third of the population and the largest growing demographic in Central Texas, the influence of Hispanic culture can be found everywhere- from literature and art to cuisine and traditions!

We are proud to serve the Latinx community of Central Texas through our free adult, career, and family literacy programs.
