Happy AmeriCorps Week!

Each year, AmeriCorps Week is celebrated in order to raise awareness about the program and the important work that AmeriCorps members do in communities across the country. It is a time to recognize the incredible impact that AmeriCorps members have on the lives of individuals and the communities they serve.

One of the ways the Literacy Coalition of Central Texas works to achieve our mission to break the cycle of intergenerational poverty is through the AmeriCorps program- specifically the Texas Family Literacy AmeriCorps (TFLA) and AmeriCorps VISTA Initiative!

“Serving with AmeriCorps taught me that anyone, no matter who you are, can make a difference in their communities and that empathy and support goes a long way and can mean the world to someone else.” – Bianca Garcia, AmeriCorps VISTA Alumni

Our TFLA program is an AmeriCorps program that focuses on improving literacy and educational outcomes for adults and families in Texas. The goal of the TFLA program is to help individuals and families build the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in school and in life. AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) is a national service program that focuses on fighting poverty in America. VISTA members work to empower individuals and communities by providing access to resources and opportunities that can help break the cycle of poverty.

By recruiting, training, and placing members at our partner sites to provide literacy and career development services, we are able to work towards a 100 percent literate, employable, and self-sufficient community. With the power of AmeriCorps members, our community has more classes available to the public, increasing access to literacy programs.

AmeriCorps members work to build capacity in their organizations, which means they help to create, expand, or improve programs and services that address poverty, and provide direct services to clients. In 2022, AmeriCorps members expanded capacity at local agencies through service, providing education and career development services and increasing access to free and holistic literacy programs. In total, our 37 TFLA members and 12 AmeriCorps VISTA members served 76,433 hours across 11 service sites!

As we celebrate AmeriCorps Week, it is important to recognize the vital role that AmeriCorps members play in addressing critical needs in communities across the country. AmeriCorps members are making a real difference in the lives of individuals and communities.
