LITERACY NEED RESOURCES

Below are links to statistical information regarding literacy needs throughout Texas and the country.

Literacy programs serve only 3.6% of the 3.8 million adults in Texas who need adult basic education services. (Texas LEARNS 2010)

In 2008, Texas ranked 3rd in the nation among all states for the number of adults who took the GED® test – 53,000 adults – an indication of the number of adults residing in Texas who do not have a high school diploma. (American Council on Education).

Texas ranks 47th in literacy nationwide, spending an average of $8,350 per student annually compared to the national average of $11,762. Presently, Texas has the lowest national percentage of people aged 25 years and older to complete high school or GEDs.

Adults with low literacy can struggle with paying bills, understanding their medication or applying for jobs. They earn $13,000 less than those with even moderate literacy and are 10 times likelier to face poverty than highly literate adults. Children whose parents struggle with literacy are 10 times likelier to have low literacy. (Houston Adult Literacy Blueprint)
